MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin state Assembly plans to honor two Oak Creek police officers who responded to the deadly shooting at a Sikh Temple there last year.
Lt. Brian Murphy and officer Sam Lenda were scheduled to be recognized as "Hometown Heroes" by the Assembly on Tuesday.
Murphy was shot multiple times by a gunman who killed six worshippers at the temple. The shooter took his own life after Lenda shot him.
Murphy is on medical leave while recovering from wounds to his head, neck and body. He also appeared at the State of the Union speech in February as a guest of Michelle Obama.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said Tuesday on Twitter that "those who run toward danger to keep us safe are truly heroes."
