EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – Dozens of people walked in memory of loved ones lost to suicide on Saturday in Eau Claire.
The Out of the Darkness Community Walk took people on a four-mile walk of healing through Owen Park.
Organizers said 38,000 people lose their lives to suicide every year across the nation.
Organizers said the loss felt when a family member or friend takes their own life can be isolating. This walk is meant to help connect those people still healing and let them know there is help.
“We really try to get the message out there that it is not just a national issue suicide is a local issue in the Chippewa Valley and to provide the local resources and support to them,” said Natalie Carlsten.
This year, walkers were also given seedlings to plant in honor of their loved one. The money raised at the event goes to the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention.
