LA CROSSE, Wis (WEAU)- Family games are becoming a ‘lost art’ that is easily being replaced by technology and video games.

It’s all about getting back to the basics for the La Crosse Children’s Museum as they try to help parents get better at simple open ended creative play. The program is called Imagine-Nation and is offered in quarterly sessions. Each session has a theme and the next theme will be building blocks.

“We are reading more and more studies that kids are not doing the basic, simple no tech or low tech play so we put this together. Building blocks create math skills, help with sequencing, color matching, and shapes,” said La Crosse Children’s Museum Marketing Director Leanne Poellinger.

It is the age of technology. One dad, Ryan Wilke grew up with video games and says that it’s something that he can share with his boys.

“I have the classics, Mario brothers and they like playing,” said Wilke.

To make sure they don’t spend too much time glued to the screen Wilke says he sets limitations.

“At the same time we try to do outdoor activities and they have a room full of toys,” said Wilke.

Some new parents say they are finding it difficult to get away from the technology

“When I am around other parents that have their kids on i-pads or i-pods it’s tough because then my kid wants to use the technology,” said interactive mother Andrea Van Wyk.

That’s why the La Crosse Children’s Museum is putting on the Imagine-Nation program, to give parents the chance to be creative with simple supplies.

“No computers, no rules, just putting a bunch of blocks together and letting kids be creative,” explained Poellinger.

The building block session will be on Saturday, November 24 between 11am and 3 pm. Donations of clean, new or gently used Lego and Duplos are welcome.
