LA CROSSE, Wis (WEAU)- Only on WEAU13: The re-election of President Barack Obama, brought about a movement in Wisconsin to secede from the union. Thousands have signed on.

Last week Alex T. from Wausaukee, Wisconsin created the online petition for the State of Wisconsin. The petition posted on the governmental website called “We the People” asks the Obama administration to “Peacefully allow the state of Wisconsin to withdraw from the United States of America and create it’s own new government.”

"I think petitioning gets it's point across, sometimes it's the only way
to get the ear of some of the politicians is to get so many signatures
and make a petition,” said supporter Greg Luce.

Luce says he knows secession probably won't happen, but considers the petition a statement.

"I've heard a lot about these petitions, people saying that they are
un-American or treasonous and that's untrue. They are making a statement, and a lot of people thought the election was our last chance to get rid of Obama-care,” said Luce.

All 49 other states also have their own separate secession petitions on the website.

"I don't forsee it ever happening in our country, that's what the civil
war was for. I think it's extreme to even get a petition going,” said non-supporter Tim Saliu.

Political expert Cecilia Manrique says the supreme court has made it so states aren't likely to withdraw from the U.S.

"There has to be a successful revolution, or ¾ of the state
has to be in agreement for a secession to be possible,” said Manrique.

As of Thursday afternoon the Wisconsin petition had more than 6-thousand signatures. The goal is 25-thousand in 30 days.

The white house says it will respond to petitions that reach the goal.

A few states have already reached the goal of 25-thousand. Texas has well over 100 thousand signatures, but not all signatures are from people within the state.

The deadline for Wisconsin's petition is December 11th.
