The new movie Big Miracle is based on a true story and the true story is based on a device from a little company in Prescott, Wisconsin.
Kasco makes a variety of equipment including decorative outdoor fountains, but the device that is about to put them on the national map is the Kasco de-icer. The 28 pound immersible machine uses a propeller to pull warm water from deeper depths and brings it toward the surface.
It's powerful enough to even melt ice in Alaska, where the ice near Barrow had trapped a trio of whales far from the open water. Greg Farrian, who took de-icers to Alaska, said “the whales were in desperate trouble and the word came into us to let the Minnesotans try their de-icers out.”
As for the movie's accuracy, Ferrian said parts of it were accurate and parts were not. However, he said he is happy with the final product, which he saw at an advanced screening last week.
