Public encouraged to learn about invasive pests

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin residents are encouraged to be aware of the dangers posed by invasive pests that attack flowers, crops, forests and gardens.

April is Invasive Plant Pest and Disease Awareness Month. State and federal agriculture officials are using the money to spread information about how to stop the spread of diseases that can cause millions of dollars in treatment and crop losses.

Some tips include not carrying firewood from one place to another, as insects and their eggs can hide in it. Only buy plants from reputable sources and don't transport fresh fruits, vegetables or plants into Wisconsin unless they've been inspected.

Other tips from state agriculture officials include learning about pests and how to identify them.
