NEW INFORMATION: Early Wis. recount results show little difference

RACINE, Wis. (AP) -- The first day's results are in from the recount in a state Senate race, and the early results show little difference.

Results were posted Thursday in the recall race between Republican state Sen. Van Wanggaard (WAHN'-gard) and Democratic challenger John Lehman. Wanggaard's current vote total hasn't changed, while Lehman has lost one vote in each of three precincts.

An official Racine County canvass showed Lehman leading Wanggaard by 834 votes, out of nearly 72,000 ballots cast. The four precincts counted Wednesday account for about 14 percent of the total votes.

The recount is expected to wrap up around the July 2 deadline.

Democrats have criticized the recount request as a waste of time and money. Republicans say voters deserve to know whether the ballots had been counted properly.

RACINE, Wis. (AP) -- Racine County has begun its recount in the state Senate recall race that will determine the chamber's majority party.

Fourteen tabulators convened at the county courthouse Wednesday, where County Clerk Wendy Christensen gave them final instructions and let them begin.

Some tabulators reviewed poll books. Others counted the actual ballots, flagging those that weren't properly initialed by poll workers or that had stray marks.

According to state law, the county's Board of Canvass has to finish the recount of the nearly 72,000 ballots by July 2. Christensen says tabulators will work Saturday, and possibly over the following weekend too, but she's confident the board will meet its deadline..

Republican state Sen. Van Wanggaard requested the recount after a canvass showed him trailing Democratic challenger John Lehman by 834 votes.
