MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Assembly Republican leaders say they will not include a provision in the state budget designed to limit public access to the proposed site of an iron ore mine near Lake Superior.
Speaker Robin Vos and Majority Leader Scott Suder both said Wednesday they would not be moving ahead with the proposal.
On Tuesday, Vos said the budget would be amended to allow the state Department of Natural Resources to pass emergency rules that would restrict public access to the site. Concerns have been raised about actions by protesters on the site of the proposed mine.
Republican Rep. Mark Honadel says he's not pleased with the decision and is afraid about violence escalating at the mine site.
