TOWN OF LAFAYETTE, Wis. (WEAU) - A family in Chippewa County is hoping for the safe return of an unusual pet.
Nancy Huebler says Vern, her African Spurred tortoise escaped from its pen and wandered away from the family's home on the corner of 160th Street and 50th Avenue on August 31. The animal is about 45 pounds and almost a foot-and-a-half from the top of his shell to the bottom. Huebler says Vern is a desert animal and cannot swim. He is also not aggressive and typically hides in his shell if he's confronted.
Chippewa County Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk says the family has reported the missing tortoise to his department, and that he does not consider Vern to be dangerous. Huebler says Vern does not hibernate, so her family is eager to find him before it gets too cold for him to survive.
