Runners collapse at cross-country meet in Boyceville

BOYCEVILLE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Several student-athletes were taken to the hospital after collapsing during a girls cross-country meet Thursday afternoon.

Matt Feeney, EMS Chief with the Boyceville Community Ambulance District, says crews responded to the Boyceville-Tiffany Creek Elementary School grounds around 3:30 p.m. Friday on a report that a female runner had collapsed. When crews got there, coaches and staff at the race told them other runners were collapsing. Crews from other departments were called in. Feeney says there was a good team effort between the coaches at the race, other runners, and their families to help cool off the runners that had gone down. He says they had already broken open ice packs and poured water on them to cool them off by the time crews got to them.

Six girls were taken to a Menomonie hospital. Feeney says he believes they'll do well, but didn't have a condition update for them. Feeney says the rest of the girls race was canceled. A boys race scheduled after the girls race was also canceled.
