RICE LAKE, Wis. (AP) -- Barron County sheriff's officials say a police officer wanted for burglarizing a Green Lake restaurant has apparently stolen a second vehicle.

Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald says Waupun Officer Brad Young may have taken a 1996 white 4-door Nissan Maxima from a farm near Rice Lake. The sheriff's department issued a statewide alert for the vehicle with the license plate 480-HGK.

Fitzgerald says Young led deputies on a car chase Monday evening and fled on foot into some woods near Rice Lake. Homes in the area were temporarily evacuated.

The Green Lake County Sheriff's Department says the 43-year-old officer, dressed in camouflage, broke into Walkers Kollerville Restaurant in Green Lake about 1 a.m. Monday. A deputy chased the suspect and lost him in a cornfield. A pickup truck was stolen from a nearby residence about two hours later.

BARRON COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) -- The manhunt continues for a Waupun cop turned fugitive.

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald tells WEAU that man is Bradley Young. He is wanted for burglary and stealing a pickup truck.

According to Fitzgerald, he has been eluding officers since Monday evening. He says there was also a high speed chase that ended when the suspect took off on foot into the wooded area near 23rd Ave. and 13th St. west of Rice Lake.

"Most excitement we've ever seen, I don't know, it's scary you don't expect this out here," said Maria Spenle, who lives in the area where the suspect took off on foot.

She spent the night hunkered down in her rural Barron County home as deputies combed her yard, the woods nearby and everywhere in between, searching for Young.

"We have not only a large thick forest that we're in right now currently searching, we have a ravine, we have some culverts that are larger culverts that people can hide in," said Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald.

Deputies, local police officers, the SWAT team and even a plane were called in to help with the search.

Fitzgerald says some homes within a one-square mile radius were evacuated. The intersection at 23rd Ave. and 13th St. were blocked off until late Monday night as police combed the area, leaving no spot unturned.

"It's just kind of scary seeing the neighbors, they were forced out of the barn because they didn't know what was going on and they told them to come down the road and come out with their hands up," said Spenle.

Spenle and her family live close to the spot where Young ditched the truck he was driving but never actually saw the suspect.

"He ditched his truck at a dead end here and we're pretty sure he's going north,” Spenle said.

The search continues - meanwhile police are telling people with a home in the area to keep their doors locked. Police also say should anyone see or hear anything suspicious to call 911.
