Quick response, or QR Bar Codes, are starting to show up on almost everything from magazines and newspapers, even at the drive through. You may have noticed those small squares lately and if you pull out a smartphone, you can see what information it will lead you to online.
People we talked with say they love the idea of getting quick information right on their phones. They say they think it will save them some time. Others who have just started noticing the little squares say they’re now going to download the application for their phone. All you need to scan the bar code is a smartphone and a free app.
Once you scan the code it's like typing in a web address, without the typing. You'll get more information about the product or event, some companies even offer free music downloads or coupons. While the bar codes are popping up in magazines and newspapers there's also showing up in places you might not expect.
"They're getting a link directly to my website with more information about that property they're standing in front of," says Realtor Mike Paul.
Paul runs Discount Reality Works in Eau Claire. He says he started putting the small bar codes on his for sale signs about six months ago.
"Some people think it's pretty neat others think it's a gimmick and some people aren't impressed at all," says Paul.
He says it's an added convenience for people looking to buy and for himself.
"The alternative to having a bar code on a yard sign for real-estate is having a brochure and brochures get wet they get snowed on they blow away so from a practical stand point putting this on once is much more practical for me," says Paul.
Once you download the application to your phone all you have to do is point it at the bar code it's as simple as that.
