Eau Claire, WI (WEAU) -- Going under the knife, plastic surgery used to be reserved for those needing medical procedures but in the past few years there's been a spike in cosmetic surgery.
Some are calling it "selfie-surgery", taking drastic measures and undergoing surgery to make sure your online appearance is the best it can be, and it's gaining popularity with a younger generation.
As social media grows increasingly popular we're given the chance to have a strong online presence, which Kiana Tom with Rucker MD Plastic Surgery says, has people all ages turning to plastic surgery to make sure they're putting their best face forward.
Tom says, “Anywhere from 16 years old to 70 years old, we have such a huge age range. It's becoming increasingly more common to see a younger patient here. It used to be just ages 45 and up and now we do get a lot of consultations from 18 plus.”
Tom says in the past three years she has seen a huge increase in patients coming in for cosmetic surgery. Toms says, “It's really not taboo anymore to have plastic surgery. It used to be kind of a hush, hush thing. A lot of it, maybe it is social media. They're noticing things more because their face is just so prominent.”
Tom says 3 years ago she didn't see many men come in for cosmetic surgery but now, about 1 in 5 patients are male. “It might be because they're just seeing themselves more it is the first thing that you put out there, even for LinkedIn, for a job and online dating, people are everywhere now. So, I think people are becoming a little more critical of themselves” Tom says.
And, having your pictures available for others to view whenever they'd like has some more aware of their appearance. Eau Claire resident Crystal Schmidt says, "I guess with people posting themselves online all the time, people are more conscious of their hair, their make-up, how they look, getting the right angles so you look good. People are definitely more hyped up about how they appear online and in person."
And, while it may seem as if plastic surgery is only big in Tinseltown, Tom says it's not so. “It kind of surprising for me just how many people in the Midwest want that stuff, because it kind of seems so Hollywood, but just as many people here in Eau Claire want this.” Tom says.
Tom says some of the most requested procedures are breast augmentation and rhinoplasty, as well as non-invasive procedures, such as botox, fillers, and wrinkle reductions.
