RACINE, Wis. (WEAU) -- The Racine County Sheriff's Office says I-94 is snow-covered and very slippery with ice present. Around 60 crashes have been reported so far involving several injuries.
Among those hurt is Sen. Kathleen Vinehout (D-Alma). According to the senator's Facebook page, Vinehout was involved in a multi-vehicle accident on I-94 near Racine this morning.
The Senator's official Facebook page says she is receiving care at a local hospital. No other information has been released. But according to the page, the weather forced cancellations for events in Kenosha and Racine on Sunday.
A spokeswoman for Wheaton Franciscan hospitals in Racine and Franklin says they received 40 patients with injuries from motor vehicle crashes over about three hours Sunday. She says most of the injuries were minor.
WTMJ-TV reports that 18 patients were sent to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee with crash injuries, including six in critical condition.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office described conditions earlier Sunday as "extremely slippery and dangerous" with multiple pileups, including a fatal rollover on Interstate 43 eastbound at Highway 100.
North of Milwaukee, the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office reports 40 to 50 cars and a semi were involved in crashes on Interstate 43 with an unknown number of injuries.
The Wisconsin State Patrol says there were 16 crashes and 24 runoffs stretching from St. Croix to Jackson Counties on Sunday with no injuries.
