MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Republican U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde appears to be the wealthiest candidate in the race.

According to a financial statement provided to the Senate Ethics Committee, he has assets of at least $50 million.

The Madison businessman's assets range from roughly $58 million to $240 million, with holdings in myriad stocks, banks, real estate, as well as an investment in the Cayman Islands.

His liabilities in loans, lines of credit and credit cards range from $5.2 million to $25.4 million.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the financial statements cover Jan. 1, 2011 to June 29.

Hovde is running against former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann, former Gov. Tommy Thompson and Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald in the Aug. 14 primary. The winner will face U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin in November.
