CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) -- A Shell Lake man is dead after an overnight crash on Highway 53.

It happened at around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday near the Highway 64 exit in Bloomer.

The Chippewa County Sheriff's Department says 26-year-old Aaron Nickels was driving in the wrong direction on Highway 53, causing a head on-collision with another vehicle.

Nickels was thrown from his vehicle and pinned underneath it. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other driver, 60-year-old William Zutter from Elk Mound, was taken to the hospital and has since been released.

No word on whether alcohol may have been a factor.
