CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WEAU) -- The uncle of an officer who was shot in the line of duty says his nephew is in good spirits, and anticipating a slow, but full recovery.
Deputy Chad Kowalczyk is at a Wausau hospital. The hospital did not comment on his condition on Tuesday morning.
Chippewa County Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk went to Wausau Monday to visit his nephew. He says the shot hit his nephew in the left side of his stomach, and that the bullet has since been removed. Sheriff Kowalczyk says the shot did not damage "anything vital," but could have if the bullet had ended up an inch further one way or another. Kowalczyk says his nephew has been told that he could be released from the hospital in five to seven days, depending on his condition.
Deputy Kowalczyk is also supposed to be the best man at his brother's wedding on Saturday. Sheriff Kowalczyk says he doesn't think he'll be able to attend.
