EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) - The United Way is helping the homeless and other families in need by collecting shoe boxes.
For the past month, the United Way has been collecting donated personal care items in the shoe boxes around the community. On Thursday, volunteers began sorting the boxes that will be given to area shelters and the homeless. The boxes are filled with items like soap, shampoo, and toothpaste.
"We're collecting basic toiletry items that people who are going through a financial hardship or are homeless right now can spend their money on,” said April Dodge, of United Way Emerging Leaders. “Things like groceries and gas to get to work instead of spending their money on toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, basic essentials.”
About 250 boxes were dropped off at the United Way. Pickups will be made at six other locations across the Chippewa Valley.
