EAU CLAIRE, Wis (WEAU)-- Tis' the season of giving! As you make your list and check it twice to make sure you've got all your gifts for friends and loved ones, there is an easy way to give back to your community too.
Goodsearch/Goodshop is an organization that allows you to donate to local non-profits by shopping online.
More than 100,000 different non-profit organizations including many in Western Wisconsin work with the program.
“The more people who use it than the more money we raise,” Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Wisconsin Development & Marketing Director Christina Thrun said.
She says, for non-profits, donations are fuel.
“We are 100 percent community funded,” Thrun said.
And that’s where programs like Goodshop/Goodsearch can make a big difference with a click of a mouse.
“It gives people an easy way to give and donate without having to take extra money out of their pocket,” Thrun said.
Here's how it works; you choose your charity and then through the website go to a participating store's website. Every purchase you make using the site, the store will donate a percentage of that sale to the non-profit you chose.
“So if you are going to spend $100 dollars at least you know $2.50 of it will be donated to a program like Big Brothers Big Sisters or another organization you support,” Thrun said.
Thrun says so far Big Brothers Big Sisters has raised more than $500 using the program.
“The holidays in general are is great time people to be thinking about giving back and supporting the local community because this is a big time of year for us to raise funds for our organization,” said Thrun.
4,000 stores including Target, Walmart, Bestbuy and Amazon participate in the Goodshop.
