EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Vandals have tagged a bunch of campaign signs along the highway linking Eau Claire to several other communities.
The term "battleground" state might be a literal term here in Wisconsin, because the folks we’ve talked to are "fighting mad" about what happened to signs in their yards.
Members of surrounding communities say they have not seen anything like this before.
Sign after sign is damaged by spray paint, others were missing, on a stretch of more than 30 miles from just south of Eau Claire to Durand, down Highway-85.
Most of the damaged signs represented Republican Party candidates. None of the sign owners agreed to speak to us on camera.
They said they are afraid of what else could happen to their property if they speak out.
But, it seems like both parties have been targeted this election season.
The owner of one house said her Obama signs have been stolen several times.
Now, she's making her voice heard with a home-made one.
The owner of the property just off Grover road in Eau Claire said all of his signs were stolen this Saturday, but he replaced them all the following day.
Late last month vandals damaged this family's van, along with several signs in their yard.
We spoke with Eau Claire Police and found that they investigate vandalism, but they don't put those crimes in categories, like damage to political signs.
That's why it's tough to tell exactly how many signs have been tagged.
Most people I’ve talked to said this is the first election they've seen where this much damage has been done to the signs.
They also say at this point they can't wait for the elections to be over, and hopefully be left alone after tomorrow.
