Small NE Minnesota towns see heavy flood damage
THOMSON, Minn. (AP) -- Small towns in northeastern Minnesota experienced extensive damage from last month's flooding.
Minnesota Public Radio News reports officials are now estimating the damage in Carlton County is over $100 million.
Nearly 900 homes were damaged, and 64 of those were destroyed.
Carlton County Coordinator Dennis Generau says the damage is county-wide, from towns like Thomson and Carlton to Barnum and Moose Lake. He says every city and small town has received some damage.
Moose Lake Flood Manager Tom Paull says he worries that people from outside the region may quickly forget about the extent of the damage -- and the long road that lies ahead.
Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will be in northeast Minnesota on Wednesday to begin assessing private property damage.
