SkyWarn 13: Snowfall means business; Eau Claire preps for winter storm

EAU CLAIRE, Wisc. (WEAU) - With the snowfall expected to stick around, many are rushing to stores for last minute winter gear and buying snow blowers, shovels and salt.

Like it or not, three or more inches of snow are on their way to Western Wisconsin and many have taken notice.

"People are getting ready for the big snow storm tomorrow," Eau Claire Ace Hardware clerk Sam Hankel said.

Friday night's dusting of snow kept Eau Claire snow plows out until 5:00 a.m., and city street maintenance staff said it expects to use at least 12 plows Sunday, hitting all city streets if there are three inches or more. Drivers were reminded to park on even sides of the road on even days and odds on odd days to avoid getting a ticket or being towed.

Bruce Scherlin at Zacho Sports Center in Chippewa Falls, said after a calm winter last year, snowmobilers are excited for the forecast.

"There is some pent up demand for that. So we've got a little bit of the cabin fever going for enthusiasts for the winter recreationals," Scherlin said. "We've had two units go out today that in anticipation of the snowfall coming," he said.

Winter supplies have been in high demand at Ace Hardware too, but the change is getting mixed reviews.

"We’ve had a lot of people come in for snow shovels, salt, sold a couple snow blowers this morning," Hankel said.

"You gotta be careful for all the drivers that are not cautious enough to be driving in this stuff anyways," Cindy Whipps of Eau Claire said.

"It reminds us of Christmas coming soon, the holidays, being with friends, family. That’s always a good change," Kaylene Zambito of Eau Claire said.
