Some Wis. judges unhappy with child-porn law

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) -- Some Wisconsin court officials are pushing back against a law intended to stiffen punishment for those convicted of viewing child pornography.

The 2012 law calls for a mandatory prison sentence of at least three years. But a Reporter of Fond du Lac report says some judges and prosecutors don't like that inflexibility.

Fond du Lac County Judge Peter Grimm says judges need to make the best decision based on the facts, rather than be locked into a minimum sentence by politicians who want to be tough on crime.

And Fond du Lac County prosecutor Eric Toney says facts vary in every case, and officials need to be able to adjust accordingly.

But Republican state Rep. Mark Honadel says he sponsored the mandatory penalty because judges were being too lenient.
