State seeks damages from cleaning company

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The state Department of Administration says it is considering taking legal action against a cleaning company believed to be responsible for damaging the Capitol's marble floors last year.

Department official Paula Veltum said Monday that Peterson Cleaning Inc. out of Illinois has stained about 100 marble stones in the Capitol building due to leaked battery acid from the company's cleaning machine.

Peterson started doing floor cleaning works in the Capitol last August before the department ended the contract in December.

The department has hired a new contractor to perform cleaning duties.

Veltum says it will cost the department more than $16,000 to polish the stained stones. The work has started on Feb. 4 and will take eight to 12 weeks.

A spokeswoman for the cleaning company declined comment.
