State to move ahead with wolf hunt

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin's first wolf hunt will begin Oct. 15 despite a court ruling last week that temporarily barred the use of dogs during the hunt.

State Department of Natural Resources spokesman Bill Cosh said Wednesday that the DNR has decided to move forward with the hunt because the rules say dogs can't be used until at least Nov. 26.

Between now and then, Cosh says the DNR will work on addressing regulations related to the training and use of dogs during the hunt.

A Dane County circuit judge last week issued a temporary injunction banning the use of dogs in the hunt in response to a lawsuit followed by several Wisconsin humane societies.

A Sept. 14 hearing is set on the state's motion to dismiss the lawsuit.
