LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) -- A La Crosse elementary school student caused a scare by bringing a toy gun onto a school bus.

According to the La Crosse School District, a parent called school officials after hearing a student with two BB guns was boarding a bus headed for North Woods International School.

The bus driver confiscated what turned out to be a single plastic toy gun.

Unaware the toy had been confiscated, La Crosse school officials already had alerted First Student bus company, which alerted police.

Police tell the La Crosse Tribune the call came in around 8:15 a.m. Monday, and the bus driver had the toy ready for police when they arrived.

Police say the toy was never taken out.

Superintendent Randy Nelson says the response proves the district's safety measures work.
