Sturgeon season ends on upriver lakes

MENASHA, Wis. (AP) -- The sturgeon spearing season has come to an end on some Fox Valley lakes where the adult female limit has been reached.

Those lakes include Butte des Morts, Winneconne and Poygan. Department of Natural Resources sturgeon biologist Ryan Koenigs says spearing will likely end on the larger Lake Winnebago in the next few days.

Spearers took home 319 sturgeon on the upriver lakes. DNR officials were expecting a shorter season this year because of the clear water, several feet of ice and a strong sturgeon population. The largest fish so far was registered at Linda's Lakeview Supper Club in Pipe Sunday. Post-Crescent Media says that sturgeon weighed 148 pounds and was more than 74 inches long.

Sturgeon spearing is a Wisconsin tradition that dates back hundreds of years.
