EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Several city departments, including Eau Claire Transit, helped crews as they fought a garage fire in subzero temperatures.

Eau Claire Fire and Rescue responded to the fire on Birch Street just before 9:30 a.m. Monday. There was heavy smoke coming from a detached garage when they got to the scene. Firefighters broke in, and put out the fire. While crews were working at the scene, they asked the transit department to provide a city bus for firefighters to use to get out of the cold. The department also asked for help from the city's public works, streets, and police departments.

There's no word on what caused the fire. Damage is estimated at $12,000.
