(WEAU) - With the holiday season, many of us are trying to pinch pennies, but there's one place that some might not want to stretch their dollars.
For the past five years, Riley has worked as a server.
Although it’s her first month at Porter's restaurant in Eau Claire she usually sees a decrease in tips during the holiday season.
“Some people are really tight on their cash, I understand that, they probably have a bigger family and have to go out and buy more gifts. Then they can't really afford to tip as much,” said Riley Johnson, Porter’s Server.
“When it comes to holiday tipping, it’s really a holiday thank you so you have to kind of set priorities,” said Eric Brey, Associate Professor of School of Hospitality Leadership at UW Stout.
Eric Brey with the school of hospitality leadership at UW Stout says tipping always depends on the quality of service.
“It really comes down to what they do for you. So if you look at service providers, that are their only means of income, people like hair stylists, landscapers,” said Brey.
If you plan on getting a haircut any time before the end of the holiday season, Eric recommends that you actually tip your hair stylist the same amount as a haircut. For example, if your haircut's $50, you tip your stylist 50 bucks.
"Some have a very difficult time, wait they paid to do it, why do I have to tip them, well you know it's a thank you, if they do a good job you got to thank them,” said Brey.
Riley says while servers only make a little over $2 dollars an hour. One couple was generous enough to tip her $10 dollars, even though there was a buffet.
"We try to do our best to make what we can out of it. And get what our income seeing we don't make as much serving during serving so we rely on our tips," said Johnson.
While some may tip more at local restaurants as opposed to chains. There's another way to give back.
“If you've never done a review for your babysitter or your landscaper, take the time do some good reviews, do some good things in the virtual world for them,” said Brey.
