NEW YORK CITY, NY (NBC)-- Heightened security may be going on behind the scenes, but party goers just want a good spot to see the crystal ball drop in Times Square!

Police barricades are up and the crowds are starting to form throughout Times Square.

By tonight, it will be shoulder-to-shoulder standing room only as tens of thousands of people descend on this iconic epicenter of New Year's Eve celebrations.

In chairs, and many layers of clothing, die hards say they're ready to hunker down for the long haul until midnight.
