Three suspected in Durand hardware store burglary

DURAND , Wis. (DURAND POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS RELEASE) -- On May 11, 2014 at about 4:32 AM the Durand Police Department responded to an alarm at the ACE Hardware Store at 402 2nd Ave E in the City of Durand. When officers arrived they observed a broken front glass door. The officers cleared the building and didn’t locate anyone inside. During the investigation a lone male subject approached the scene and stated that he was the subject that broke in to the business and that he wanted to turn himself in. The subject was identified as Jacob Allen Gilbert with a date of birth of 5-15-1990. Gilbert was arrested for Burglary and Criminal Damage to Property.

During the review of the security footage officers observed a male subject assisting Gilbert with the Burglary. The officers identified the suspect as Michael D Brantner with a date of birth of 04-24-1992. Brantner was taken into custody without incident at his residence at 119 E Wells St. in the City of Durand.

Additional investigation revealed that a third suspect was involved in the incident. That suspect was identified as Benjamin L Ross with a date of birth of 01/20/1997. Ross was taken into custody without incident at 119 E Wells St. in the City of Durand.

The suspects smashed the glass out of the front entry door and the foyer entry door with a baseball bat but they did not make entry into the hardware store. The suspects sustained minor injuries from the broken glass. Nothing was taken during the Burglary.

Gilbert, Brantner, and Ross were all booked into the Pepin County Jail for the following charges- Burglary and Criminal Damage to Property. Ross was also booked in for a charge of Possession of a Switchblade Knife.
