Winchel is charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and OWI causing injury.

GILMAN, Wis. (WEAU) -- NEW INFORMATION: A man is now charged in the death of a hunter last Friday.

Online court records show that James Winchel, 42, of Sheldon is charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and OWI causing injury.

Winchel is accused of hitting two hunters with his car on County Line Road on the western edge of Taylor County.

The Taylor County Sheriff's Department says one of the hunters, Juan Salinas, 52, of Roscoe, Illinois, died at the scene of the crash.

The other hunter was taken to a hospital in Wausau with leg injuries.

Winchel was also taken to the hospital in Eau Claire.

NEW INFORMATION: The Taylor Co. Sheriff's Department said a hunter, 52-year-old Juan A. Salinas of Roscoe, Illinois died at the scene of a crash.

Deputies say they got a call around 5 p.m. on Friday, November 29 that a pedestrian was hit by a car at Miller Avenue and County Line Road. It happened 9 miles west of Gilman.

Officers say they were told several hunters were standing near County Line Road when a car officers say was going at a high rate of speed got close. Deputies say two of the hunters couldn't get out of the way in time and the car hit them.

Investigators say a Juan Salinas died at the scene. The other, Fernando Salinas, 53, also from Roscoe, was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Medford and moved by helicopter to a Wausau hospital with leg injuries. He is in serious but stable condition at Aspirus Wausau.

The driver of the vehicle, 42-year-old James L. Winchel of Sheldon is in stable condition at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire.

The investigation continues, but officers say speed and alcohol are potential contributing factors.

Investigators say a 52-year-old man from Roscoe, IL died at the scene. The other, a 53-year-old man also from Roscoe, was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Medford and moved by helicopter to a Wausau hospital with leg injuries.

The investigation continues, but officers say speed and alcohol as potential contributing factors. No names have been released.

UPDATE:

Three people are taken to the hospital when a car hits two hunters in Taylor County.

The Gilman Fire Chief tells us that two hunters were walking along County Line Road northwest of Gilman when they were hit by a car.

He says the two hunters were taken by ambulance to an area hospital, where they are expected to be flown to other facilities.

The chief says the driver of the car was airlifted from the scene.

All three of their conditions are unknown at this time.
