Thursday deadline to pay property taxes in Eau Claire Co.

(WEAU) - Thursday is the deadline for homeowners in Eau Claire County to pay their property taxes.

The lines were long at the treasurer's office Wednesday with people coming in to pay. County Treasurer Larry Lokken encouraged people to pay by mail this year because courthouse construction is making it difficult to get around in the building and to find parking, but the payment needs to be postmarked by January 31st.

Lokken says the number of people who are behind on their payments has improved. "I think within the last two or three years, we're starting to pick up more. I'm sitting here with a $1.8 million in outstanding taxes and it's starting to come in better. The economy is looking better."

Lokken says if you don't pay your property taxes on time, you'll face higher interest rates and penalties.
