MARSHFIELD, Wis. (WEAU) -- A Marshfield man was hit and killed as he tried to get out of the way of a moving train.

On Wednesday morning, Marshfield police identified the victim as Melvin Weis, 62. It happened Tuesday night near the intersection of Vine Avenue and Veterans Parkway. Weis had been crossing Veterans Parkway, and that the railroad gates came down while he was in the road. Witnesses said that he walked around the gates, tried to cross the tracks, and fell. That's when the train hit him.

Weis' brother told police he believes it was an accident, and that Weis may have been headed to a gas station to buy cigarettes.
