Vernon County Sheriff John B. Spears reports a two-vehicle collision occurred Saturday afternoon, September 7, 2013, at approximately 1:00 PM in the Town of Jefferson, two miles west of Viroqua.
Vanessa G. Voehl, age 16 of rural Westby was operating a vehicle westbound on State Highway 56. Voehl said she saw a vehicle entering State Highway 56, from Springville Road, ahead of her. Voehl said the other vehicle, driven by Kay E. Kingslien-Getter, age 50, of rural Viroqua, was also travelling west, but slow and Voehl attempted to pass the vehicle on the left. The Kingslien-Getter vehicle turned left into a private driveway while Voehl was attempting to pass. The Voehl vehicle braked but was unable to avoid a collision and struck the left, rear corner of the Kingslien-Getter vehicle.
Voehl said she did not see the turn signals or the brake lights operating on the Kingslien-Getter vehicle and the electrical system in the Kingslien-Getter vehicle appeared to be malfunctioning.
The airbag system in the Voehl vehicle deployed. Both operators and an occupant in the Kingslien-Getter vehicle were wearing seatbelts.
Vanessa Voehl suffered possible minor injuries and refused medical treatment.
Assisting the Sheriff’s Office at the scene was the Viroqua Fire Department.
The crash remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.
