EAU CLAIRE Wis. (WEAU) - UW-Eau Claire's mascot finally has a name.
Student Senate Vice President Patrick Martin says students voted to name the mascot, "Blu." The university hasn't had an official mascot since its inception.
Last year the student body voted on an image for the mascot but didn't know what to call it. Now that they have a name, the school hopes to also create a costume for the mascot.
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UW-EAU CLAIRE STUDENT SENATE NEWS RELEASE) - The Student Senate Mascot Committee ratified the results of a campus-wide naming survey on Tuesday, completing on of the last major steps towards establishing an official student mascot. Out of hundreds of name submissions, and with more than 3,200 votes cast in the survey, the blue and gold mythical bird mascot has been named “Blu.”
Full results of the survey are as follows:
Name Option Votes
After a call for name suggestions was sent via campus-wide email, a list of all names submitted by two different individuals was compiled. From this list, the Student Senate Mascot Committee selected the top five finalists. These finalists were then put to the full student body for a vote through an electronic Qualtrics survey.
The Mascot Committee hopes to have selected a costume design and contracted with a manufacturer by the end of the semester, with the goal of having Blu the Blugold at campus events by the end of the 2012-2013 academic year.
Since the institutions founding in 1916, students have made repeated efforts to establish a mascot. Today, with a name officially selected and a costume soon to be chosen, UWEC students are closer than ever before to fully realizing this goal.
