MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The University of Wisconsin-Madison is now offering a certificate in Pilates.
The Wisconsin State Journal reports the program is believed to be the first of its kind in the nation in which a four-year university offers its own credit classes in Pilates leading to a certificate.
Pilates is a body-conditioning discipline developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates.
Collette Stewart is an associate lecturer of dance at UW-Madison who helped start the certificate program. She says a few other universities have partnered with outside Pilates schools to offer a similar certificate program.
The program is 20 credits and is meant to prepare students for the Pilates Method Alliance Board certification exam.
The school launched the program this fall.
