DOUGLAS COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) -- The trial for Dr. David Van de Loo continued Wednesday in Superior.
The court heard from one of the victims and their family for the first time as the prosecution began to lay out its case.
The first witness to take the stand was one of the 15 teens accusing Dr. Van de Loo of sexual assault. He told the jury that during the sports physical exam, Van de Loo tried to get him erect by touching him three separate times over a half hour period. He said it made him feel 'ashamed and uncomfortable.'
His parents took the stand next and told the jury they went to talk to Mayo about the appointment and their concerns with what happened.
On Wednesday, one of Mayo's nurse supervisors described what she remembered from the meeting.
"They were concerned with what was the normal for an adolescent exam and asked if she could describe it to them," said Jo Bartholomew, Mayo Clinic Health System Nurse Supervisor.
The parents met with another physician, the nurse, and Van de Loo. The parents said Van de Loo told them he was looking for an abnormality and apologized if their son misinterpreted it as sexual.
Court adjourned Wednesday afternoon and testimony is expected to continue Thursday starting at 8:30 a.m. The trial is expected to last three weeks.
Testimony from two Mayo Clinic Health Systems nurses wrapped up day 2 of the Doctor David Van de Loo sex assault trial.
One nurse Joe Bartholomew said she met with one of the victims parents after they came in upset over an exam. They asked her what the typical adolescence exam for boys was like and did it involve the penis. She also said she remembered them being visibly upset. She told Van de Loo quote "he needed to report this".
The day began with testimony from the stepfather of one of the 15 victims. He told the court his stepson came home and told him about his appointment with Doctor David Van de Loo. The stepfather says they boy told him he needed to tell him something embarrassing.
The victim told prosecutors that during his appointment, Van de Loo touched him three separate times, lasting about a half hour. The victim used a highlighter to demonstrated for the jury how he was touched.
There are expected to be 50 to 100 witnesses called during the trial which is scheduled to last three weeks. Van de Loo is charged with 16 counts of felony sexual assault.
His lawyers argue Van de Loo's actions were part of a medical procedure, and they were not sexually motivated.
Jury selection has ended in the sex assault trial for Eau Claire doctor David Van de Loo in Douglas County.
Nine men and seven women will make up the 16 jurors for Van de Loo's trial.
The longtime physician in the Mayo Clinic Health System faces more than a dozen felony charges related to sexual assaults of young patients.
The accusations against the pediatrician first arose in August of 2012. The trial was moved to Douglas County after Van de Loo's attorney filed a change of venue request.
