RICHLAND CENTER, Wis. (AP) -- Richland High School says vandals killed 39 young pheasants that were part of a student project and freed dozens of others.
Maintenance workers also found a portable toilet had been tipped over at the athletic field and a piece of irrigation equipment was damaged.
WISC-TV reports the high school's agriculture teacher who was checking on the pheasants discovered a shed had been broken into Wednesday and found some dead birds. More dead birds were found in a second shed. About 70 pheasants escaped. The students raise the pheasant chicks from June to October and then release them into the wild.
