Walker speaks about Act 10 decision

(WEAU) - Friday, Governor Walker talked to the press following a big ruling in his favor over the controversial law stripping most public workers of their collective bargaining rights.

"In this case, federal court said when it comes to the constitution, our reforms that we enacted in a legitimate process are ultimately constitutional, legally upheld and that's good news for the taxpayers of Wisconsin," said Walker

A federal appeals court has upheld the law that prompted large protests at the state capitol two years ago.

Seven public unions, including the teachers' union, challenged the law's constitutionality in 2011. In March, a U.S. district judge said the law illegally halted the automatic withdrawal of union dues. But Friday, the 7th circuit court of appeals said the law is constitutional and released a decision to uphold the law.

Walker says while it's easy to see this as a win for his administration, he doesn't see it that way. "The real winners in this aren't me, it's not a political win. The real winners are the people in the state, the taxpayers in Wisconsin who can now have the people they duly elect at the local and state level, to be in charge of taxes and spending and not a handful of government driven special interests."

The Wisconsin Education Association Council issued a statement Friday. It says in part, “this marks a setback. WEAC is in the process of reviewing the court decision to determine the organization's next steps.”
