Madison – Governor Scott Walker announced Tuesday plans to declare a State of Emergency following heavy rain and flooding for Douglas, Ashland and Bayfield Counties. Governor Walker made the announcement after touring the Superior area with Major General Donald Dunbar, the Adjutant General of the Wisconsin National Guard, Wisconsin Emergency Management Administrator Brian Satula, U.S. Congressman Sean Duffy (R-Wisconsin), state Rep. Nick Milroy (D-South Range) , state Rep. Janet Bewley (D-Ashland ), state Sen. Bob Jauch’s Chief of Staff Jeff Buhrandt , local officials and flood victims.

“It’s always difficult to see the damage left behind once flood waters recede,” Said Governor Walker. “Damage done in just a couple of days can take weeks or months to recover from. We want to make sure we are doing everything we can to help move the process along. I commend the people living in the Superior area, the friends and neighbors, who stepped up to help those most affected by the flooding.”

Excessive rains June 19 and 20 led to flood related damages at more than 500 homes and businesses. Public infrastructure including roads and culverts were also damaged or destroyed across the region. The cost of that damage is estimated at more than $2.5 million. Some roads remain under water.

The State of Emergency declaration helps local governments pay for the unreimbursed costs of damage and cleanup to public infrastructure. Governor Walker has also directed all state agencies to assist as appropriate in this effort to help those affected recover from this devastating event.
