Weekly Northwest Region Construction Update

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (RELEASE FROM DEPT. OF TRANSPORTATION)--The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is providing a weekly update on construction projects in the northwest region, which includes the counties of Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Buffalo, Burnett, Chippewa, Clark, Douglas, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Rusk, Sawyer, St. Croix, Taylor, Trempealeau and Washburn counties.

Construction related traffic impacts are subject to change and dependent on favorable weather patterns.

Ashland County
No state construction projects currently in progress

Barron County (Expected to resume mid-May 2013)
Highway: US 53 and County V
Location: Approximately 27th Avenue – County SS
Schedule: May 3, 2012 – Nov. 15, 2013
Cost: $10.6 million
Description: Constructing a new interchange north of County V with two bridges and two retaining walls.
Traffic Impact: Traffic will begin running on normal configuration (northbound on northbound lanes, southbound traffic on southbound lanes) later this week. However, the median will remain closed at County V. Motorists should follow detour.

Bayfield County
No state construction projects currently in progress

Buffalo County
Highway: WIS 25
Location: Nelson-Durand, Fox Coulee Creek Bridge
Schedule: April 17, 2013 – August 2013
Cost: $560,000
Description: Resurface project and bridge improvements.
Traffic impact: WIS 25 traffic will be restricted to one travel lane within the project limits 24 hours per day for the entire project schedule. Traffic signals will be used to control the traffic which will allow one late at a time to cross one half the bridge.

Burnett County
No state construction projects currently in progress

Chippewa County
Highway: WIS 29, County J Bridge
Location: Town of Lafayette
Schedule: April, 2013 – May 22, 2013
Cost: $750,000
Description: Bridge and ramp improvements.
Traffic impact: County Road J is closed at the bridge for the entire construction duration. Intermittent lane closures on WIS 29 during entire project. Single lane closures on WIS 29 westbound and eastbound lanes.

Clark County
No state construction projects currently in progress

Douglas County
Highway: WIS 35
Location: Belknap Street-3rd Street, City of Superior
Schedule: April 17, 2013 – June 14, 2013
Cost: $13.4 million
Description: Pavement replacement
Traffic Impact: WIS 35 (Tower Avenue) will be closed from Belknap Street to 3rd Street during construction. 3rd Street to Hughitt Avenue will be single lane in each direction. All intersections open to cross street access will be closed during construction except either Winter Street or Broadway Street. No two adjacent side streets will be closed at one time between 8th Street to 4th Street. Alley access will be maintained during construction.

Dunn County
Highway: I-94
Location: Westbound Red Cedar Bridges near Menomonie
Schedule: April 2013 – November 2013
Cost: $6.6 million
Description: Reconstructing new bridges over the Red Cedar River. Old structures will be removed over the next two construction seasons.
Traffic impact: The right lane on I-94 will be closed Tuesday between westbound on-ramp and County B and westbound off-ramp to the rest area. The right shoulder on I-94 will be closed Monday-Friday between the westbound on-ramps at County Road B and the westbound off-ramp to the rest area.

Location: WIS 128-WIS 25(Hudson – Menomonie)
Schedule: April 29, 2013 – Sept. 6, 2013
Cost: $12.4 million
Description: Resurface project
Traffic impact: Single lane closures from 7 p.m. – 8 a.m.

Eau Claire/Trempealeau Counties
Highway: I-94
Location: Mallard Road – County NN
Schedule: March 2013 – Nov. 9, 2013
Cost: $34 million
Description: Pavement replacement, new structures.
Traffic impact: Both eastbound and westbound passing lanes are closed during the entire project. Traffic will be one lane in each direction running bidirectional on the eastbound side and split up in the middle portion with westbound traffic travelling on a temporary road. Traffic will remain bidirectional until Memorial Day. Mallard Road will be closed until May 24, 2013 (may be closed longer due to the wet spring). MOTORIST ALERT-DUE TO HEAVY CONGESTION ON FRIDAY AND SUNDAY AFTERNOONS BETWEEN EAU CLAIRE AND OSSEO, MOTORISTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO USE ALTERNATE ROUTES. EASTBOUND TRAFFIC SHOULD EXIT AT US 53 (#70), WESTBOUND TRAFFIC SHOULD EXIT AT WIS 121 (#98) AND FOLLOW ALTERNATE ROUTE SIGNS. Ramps at US 10 and County HH may be shut down during periods of peak traffic on Friday and Sunday nights to minimize backups on I-94.

Highway: I-94
Location: Menomonie-Eau Claire, WIS 312/County EE-WIS 37
Schedule: April 24, 2013 – July 2, 2013
Cost: $4.9 million
Description: Resurface project
Traffic impact: I-94 eastbound and westbound traffic will be single lane in each direction. Work hours are from 8 p.m.-7 a.m.

Jackson County
Highway: US 12
Location: Village of Merrillan
Schedule: April 29, 2013 – Oct. 11, 2013
Cost: $2.4 million
Description: Pavement replacement, new structures.
Traffic impact: Beginning on April 29, 2013 US 12 will be closed between WIS 95 and Old Highway 12 for stage 1 construction work. The proposed stage 1 detour route (northbound) is I-94 to WIS 95 to US 12. The proposed stage 1 detour route (southbound) is WIS 95 to I-94 to US 12. Midway through the summer, stage 2 will begin which will close US 12 between Merrill Street and WIS 95. The proposed stage 2 detour route (northbound) is WIS 95 to US 10 to US 12. The proposed stage 2 detour route (southbound) is US 10 to WIS 95 to US 12. During stage 1, an alternate route for I-94 will be signed. The I-94 alternate route is WIS 95 to County FF to County F to County A to US 12.

Pepin County
No state construction projects currently in progress

Pierce County
Highway: US 63
Location: Red Wing-Ellsworth, 825th Street Intersection, Northern Rail Road Bridge
Schedule: April 17, 2013 – Sept. 12, 2013
Cost: $2 million
Description: Resurface project and bridge improvements.
Traffic impact: US 63 will be closed to all traffic and detoured 24 hours per day for the entire project schedule. The detour route will use WIS 35 to County VV with temporary traffic signals to control the traffic at all intersections.

Polk County
Highway: WIS 63
Location: Baldwin-Clear Lake
Schedule: April 2013 – Oct. 19, 2013
Cost: $15.5 million
Description: Reconstruction of pavement and construction of modern roundabout at WIS 63, WIS 65 and WIS 46.
Traffic impact: Staging construction.

Rusk County
No state construction projects currently in progress

St. Croix County
Highway: I-94
Location: WIS 65 Roberts Interchange (Hudson – Menomonie)
Schedule: April 2013 – November 2013
Cost: $24.8 million
Description: Work to resume on the interchange project beginning April 1. A diamond interchange will be constructed with roundabouts at the ramp terminals. Two miles of I-94 will be reconstructed.
Traffic impact: 2 lanes of traffic are operating for both east and westbound traffic on the new eastbound alignment. Speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the area.

Highway: I-94
Location: WIS 35 N-US 12 (Hudson area)
Schedule: April 2013-August 2013
Cost: $5.4 million
Description: Concrete pavement repairs and intersection improvements at Carmichael Road.
Traffic Impact: Lane closures during the overnight hours.

Highway: I-94
Location: Hudson Bridges
Schedule: April 2013-August 2013
Cost: $5.9 million
Description: Epoxy overlays on both bridges.
Traffic impact: I-94 eastbound and westbound traffic will be reduced to one or two lanes during night time closures.

Highway: US 63
Location: Baldwin-Clearlake, WIS 46-WIS 64 US 63
Schedule: April 29, 2013 – October 2013
Cost: $15.5 million
Description: Intersection work.
Traffic impact: Intermittent lane closures during entire project.

Highway: Hanley Road Interchange Roundabout
Location: River Falls-Hudson
Schedule: April 2013 – to be determined
Cost: $24.8 million
Description: Bridge and concrete improvements
Traffic impact: Eastbound lanes closed from 6 a.m. – 2 p.m. and westbound lanes closed from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. to begin Monday-Thursday, April 22-25.

Sawyer County
No state construction projects currently in progress

Taylor County
No state construction projects currently in progress

Washburn County
No state construction projects currently in progress.
