HEAT WAVE 2012: What to eat to beat the heat

EAU CLAIRE, Wis (WEAU)- With the sun blazing and heat index well above 100, one of the main foods people are craving is ice cream and frozen yogurt but those are not the only food that will keep you cool.

"Watermelon is great I just fill up on it we probably instead of always drinking water.”

Ron and Carol Zerimba are stocking up on fruits and vegetables.
"Anything cool."

Medical experts say eating 'cool' foods is one of the keys to beating the heat. Water based fruits like watermelon which is 99 percent water will keep you hydrated. The same goes for vegetables like cucumbers and peppers.

It's recommended that on a hot day you get at least 64 ounces of water, more if you’re spending a lot of time outside.

"It’s very important that you stay hydrated I’m actually going to use the word critical because you can become so d-hydrated so fast," says Registered Dietitian, Diane Dressel, with the Mayo Clinic Health System

Dressel says another way to stay cool is to stay away from heavy foods--which means anything fried battered and calorie packed.
"The more calories the more your body has to work and the more it heats up that's why light foods like fruits and vegetables and sandwiches are good."

And after dinner, the favorite summer desert is another cool option that will keep you hydrated.

Dressel says just choose a sugar free option.
