WHITEHALL, Wis. (WEAU) -- October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month, but one school in western Wisconsin has decided to shift the focus, educating students on the importance of kindness, instead.

Thursday afternoon Gordy's Guru Matt Selvig and WEAU's Nikki Junewicz were thrilled to present Whitehall Elementary as our Schools Rule! contest winner.

Whitehall School District's two guidance counselors were given $3,000 in Box Tops for Education, courtesy of General Mills, to use for the "Year of Kindness" program.

Each month will focus on new themes to build community and encourage a positive atmosphere at the school.

"We're going to use the money to foster kindness in the Whitehall area, we'll be doing kindness activities in the school, we'll be doing kindness activities in the community, also at home with families, and also spreading kindness to animals," explains Whitehall Elementary School Guidance Counselor Lisa Moore.

Moore says the money will be used for program materials, special speakers, and supplies for community service projects.
