WINONA, Minn. (WEAU) -- A Winona State University football player died while working out with his teammates Monday.

KARE-TV in Minneapolis cites a statement from the university in reporting that Shawn Afryl, 22, died at Maxwell Field. He had recently transferred to Winona State, and was enrolled as a Social Studies - Teaching major. Assistant Head Football Coach Cameron Keller called Afryl a good influence on his teammates, and said that he had been a great fit for the team and the campus. Afryl's mother said her son planned on teaching history and becoming a high school football coach.

Keller said Monday's workout was held at 7:30 p.m., and that Afryl collapsed shortly after the session began. He also said practice was a voluntary session run by strength staff. Coaches weren't there because of NCAA regulations.
