MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin wildlife officials are offering to search 100 properties for rare plants and animals for free.

The Department of Natural Resources will choose the properties through a lottery. Interested landowners can enter the drawing through the DNR's website through March 10. Winners will be chosen on March 11 and notified by March 14.

If a review turns up a rare species, the DNR will provide the landowner with recommendations on how to protect it and enhance its habitat. Agency officials say even if landowners aren't interested in conservation, the reviews can help them avoid impacts on rare species and secure permits for projects.

Such reviews usually run about $150.
