MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' board is set to consider permanent rules prohibiting hunters from firing their weapons across trails in state parks.

A 2011 state law allows hunting and trapping in state parks but gives the DNR's board the authority to prohibit the practices in designated use areas. The board adopted emergency rules barring hunters from firing guns, air-guns, bows and crossbows from or across trails and requiring trappers to use dog-proof traps for the 2013 hunting and trapping seasons.

The board is set to take up a permanent version of the rules at its Feb. 26 meeting in Madison. DNR officials say the rules shouldn't have any effect on hunting in state parks, although the trapping restriction would limit trappers to mostly raccoons.
