MILTON, Wis. (AP) -- Officials in one southern Wisconsin city are directing local police to stop blacking out certain information from police reports, saying the city needs to err on the side of openness.

A Janesville Gazette report says the Milton City Council approved the ordinance Wednesday. The measure directs police to stop redacting people's addresses, ages and other personal identifying information before making police reports available to the public.

Many Wisconsin cities have made a practice of redacting that information. They say revealing personally identifying information opens them up to liability under the Driver Privacy Protection Act.

Milton's insurers support the practice, but City Administrator Jerry Schuetz says it sidesteps Wisconsin's open-records laws.

Alderwoman Anissa Welch says it shouldn't be up to an insurance company to decide how transparent the government is.
