MILWAUKEE (AP) -- New quarterly figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show Wisconsin has dropped to 44th in the nation for creating private-sector jobs.

The data covers the period from September 2011 to September 2012. It shows Wisconsin's place in private-sector jobs is declining from a rank of 42nd in the previous 12-month period through June 2012 and from a rank of 37 in the 12 months through March 2012.

The bureau's quarterly report is based on a census of 96% of all American non-farm employers, public and private.

The Journal Sentinel says other Midwestern states are performing better than Wisconsin. Indiana ranked 11th in the quarterly report, Michigan was 13th and Ohio was 24th.

A call to Gov. Scott Walker's spokesman and the Department of Workforce Development was not immediately returned.
