Wis. Senate leader spent $120k around recall

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Republican state Senate Leader Scott Fitzgerald has filed campaign finance reports that show he spent more than $120,000 in the weeks surrounding last month's recalls.

The reports cover the period between May 22 and June 27. Fitzgerald's show he spent $120,278 and raised $43,259 during that span. Since January he has raised $389,405 and spent $487,186.

His recall opponent, Democrat Lori Compas, raised $92,748 and spent $91,863 during the reporting period. For the year she raised $197,370 and spent $111,337.

Democrats angry with Republican Gov. Scott Walker's plan stripping most public workers of nearly all their union rights forced the governor, Fitzgerald and four other GOP officeholders in recalls. Fitzgerald, of Juneau, easily defeated Compas in the June 5 elections.
